A battery that drains fast is one of the most common problems we hear about. Sometimes the battery is simply old, but just as often a setting or an app is using power when you are not looking. Start with the settings, then judge the battery.
Find what is using the power
Open Settings, then Battery. Both Android and iPhone show which apps used the most power in the last day. Anything high on the list that you hardly used is running in the background. Restrict its background activity, turn off its location access, or remove it.
The usual suspects are social apps, games, navigation apps left running and old apps that are no longer updated. A single misbehaving app can cost you a third of your battery.
“A single app running in the background can quietly use a third of your battery every day.
Settings that make a difference
Turn on auto-brightness, shorten the screen timeout to thirty seconds and use dark mode if your phone has an OLED screen. Turn off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi scanning when you do not need them, and set location to While using the app for most apps.
Weak signal drains a battery fast too, because the phone keeps searching for a network. In places with poor coverage, use Wi-Fi calling, or switch on Airplane mode when you do not need the phone.
Is it time for a new battery?
On iPhone, open Settings, Battery, Battery Health. Below 80 percent, a replacement is worth it. Many Android phones show battery health under Settings, Battery or Device care; if yours does not, a phone that gets warm and drains fast even when idle usually needs a new battery.
A battery replacement costs far less than a new phone and often makes a three-year-old phone feel new again. Use an authorised repair shop, so the phone stays safe and its water resistance is restored.
